NXP MIFARE Classic® 1K RFID Sticker, 30mm x 15mm

The NXP MIFARE Classic 1K sticker carries the same chip as a MIFARE Classic 1K card in a small self-adhesive label, so it works with readers set up for MIFARE Classic access control cards. At 30mm x 15mm, it fits in the corner of a standard ID card, which turns an existing photo ID into a door credential without reissuing the card. It also sticks to equipment, membership items and phone cases where a full-size card won’t fit.

Each of the 16 sectors has two keys that control who can read and write it. That lets one sticker hold data for more than one system, such as door access in one sector and cashless vending in another.

The sticker’s antenna is smaller than a card’s, so its read range is shorter. Present it close to the reader.

Fix the sticker to a non-metal surface. Metal directly behind an RFID sticker interferes with the signal, so it won’t read reliably on metal equipment or a metal phone case.

If the card it goes on already has a 13.56MHz chip, such as another MIFARE or DESFire chip, the reader may pick up both and struggle to read either. A 125kHz proximity card is a different frequency, so the sticker works alongside it.

MIFARE Classic uses NXP’s own protocol on top of ISO 14443A, so phone support varies. Many Android phones with an NXP NFC chip can read it, but iPhones can’t. For tap-to-phone uses such as smart posters, an NFC Forum tag like NTAG suits better.

The original MIFARE Classic encryption has known weaknesses, so high-security doors are better served by MIFARE DESFire EV3. For staff access, canteens, car parks and leisure memberships, MIFARE Classic 1K remains one of the most widely supported chips in use. It drops straight into an existing MIFARE Classic system with no changes to readers or software.
