Access control key fobs contain an embedded chip programmed with a unique code. When the fob is held near a compatible door reader, it uses radio waves to transmit that code wirelessly. The system then verifies the ID and unlocks the door if the user is authorised. This makes the process quick, secure and completely contactless.

Some low frequency 125kHz fobs can be copied easily, which can pose a security risk so we wouldn’t recommend these for high security environments. Higher-frequency 13.56MHz fobs, such as MIFARE® and DESFire®, use encryption that makes unauthorised copying significantly harder.
