2026 FIFA World Cup Safest Stadiums Index

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in history with games spanning across 16 stadiums across the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, this does mean there’s no consistent approach to safety or security across the tournament.

Some stadiums are easier to reach, some have better transport facilities and others deliver state of the art security measures, including robot security dogs.

To fully understand the breadth of security measures used, we’ve created a data-driven index to understand which of the World Cup stadiums are the safest.

To make sure the results were based on data, we evaluated each of the stadiums using four key factors that were each weighted differently: safety (40%), transport (25%), stadium technology (25%) and event readiness (10%). Weighted this way, we ensured that the rankings reflected real conditions and resulted in a score out of 100, overall.

2026 FIFA World Cup Stadium Safety Index Rankings

Topping the 2026 FIFA World Cup Stadium Security Index is the Gillette Stadium in Boston and BC Place in Vancouver, both scoring an impressive 82.9 out of 100.

Overall FIFA World Cup 2026 Stadium Safety Index Rankings

Gillette Stadium earns its place at the top thanks to Boston’s low crime rates (the best of any host city in the index) and a full five-point score for its security technology. BC Place counters with a perfect 10/10 for transport, the only stadium to achieve that, and is boosted by the nearest airport being 1 mile away.

BMO Field in Toronto takes third place (75.4), followed by MetLife Stadium in New York (70.7) in fourth, the venue that will host the World Cup Final itself.

At the other end of the table, Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (36.3) and Estadio Akron in Guadalajara (37.6) rank lowest overall, with both cities scoring below average across multiple categories.

The Safest World Cup Cities and Stadiums

The city surrounding a stadium will shape fan experience long before they reach the turnstiles. The crime and safety scores reveal striking contrasts across all the 16 host cities.

Gillette Stadium scores a perfect 10 out of 10. Boston’s combination of a high safety index and low crime rate puts it in a league of its own. Close behind are the two Canadian venues BC Place (Vancouver, 9.05) and BMO Field (Toronto, 8.74).

The picture is notably different for the three Mexican host cities Estadio Azteca (Mexico City) scores 0 out of 10 in this category, with Estadio Akron (Guadalajara, 1.56) and NRG Stadium (Houston, 1.30) also ranking near the bottom. Several other US cities including Atlanta, Philadelphia and San Francisco all score below 3 out of 10.

It's worth noting that low crime scores reflect city-level data rather than the stadiums themselves, which all have robust on-site security in place.

The Best World Cup Stadiums by Transport Links

The index considers how well-connected venues are to understand how safe fans might be as they make their way to and from the stadium.

BC Place in Vancouver is the runaway leader here, achieving a perfect 10 out of 10. It benefits from exceptional walk and transit scores, and sits just one mile from the nearest airport, the perfect combo for fan accessibility.

BMO Field in Toronto (8.85) comes second in this category benefits from Billy Bishop Airport being just a mile away.

Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City scores just 0.36 out of 10, the lowest of all the venues, large due to minimal public transport options and a 27 mile distance to Kansas City International Airport. Fans travelling there will be heavily reliant on private transport which can bring in crowd management issues.

The Best World Cup Stadiums by Security Tech

Once fans are inside, the technology deployed at a stadium plays a crucial role in preventing incidents before they happen. We looked at five publicly confirmed measures at each venue: CCTV coverage, metal detectors, vehicle screening, a formal bag policy, and AI-assisted screening.

Eight stadiums achieved the maximum 5 out of 5, demonstrating that the majority of World Cup venues have invested seriously in their security infrastructure. Gillette Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, Lumen Field, NRG Stadium, Levi's Stadium, Estadio BBVA, and one other all confirmed all five measures are in place.

One of the most notable findings here is the presence of AI screening which is still a relatively new technology in stadium environments. Venues like MetLife (which has deployed AI-powered camera systems) and Levi's Stadium (which has been involved in DHS pilot programmes ahead of the tournament) are leading the way in next-generation security.

Three stadiums, BC Place, BMO Field, and Estadio Azteca scored 4 out of 5, with vehicle screening unconfirmed at the Canadian venues and AI screening not yet publicly confirmed at Azteca.
No venue scored below 3, which is a reassuring baseline for anyone attending the tournament.

The Best World Cup Stadiums by Major Event Readiness

Hosting a World Cup match isn't just about having a big stadium it's about knowing how to manage the unique demands of a major international event. We scored each venue based on the highest-level event it has previously hosted, from MLS Cup appearances all the way up to multiple Super Bowls.

Rankings table of the stadiums at the 2026 FIFA World Cup that are the most prepared to host a major event

The majority of US stadiums score full marks, having hosted multiple Super Bowls or equivalent large-scale finals. MetLife Stadium, Gillette Stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, AT&T Stadium, SoFi Stadium, Levi's Stadium, NRG Stadium, and Mercedes-Benz Stadium all fall into this category, a reflection of the NFL's long history of delivering high-security, high-profile events.

BC Place and Estadio Azteca both score 2 out of 3, having each hosted a single major final-level event (the 2015 Women's World Cup Final and a FIFA World Cup match respectively).

Several venues including BMO Field, Lumen Field, Estadio BBVA, Estadio Akron, Lincoln Financial Field, and Arrowhead Stadium score 1 out of 3, having hosted significant tournaments but not at the very highest tier.

Experience matters when the pressure is on. The good news is that every venue on this list has some form of major event pedigree to draw from.

Summary

The 2026 World Cup is shaping to be one of the most secure in history. From AI-powered screening across US stadiums to exceptional transport infrastructure in Canada’s host cities, the venues chosen for the tournament have clearly invested in keeping fans safe. While some gaps remain, particularly around city-level crime, the overall picture is positive.
