About the Evolis Quantum 2 Backup Pack

Evolis built this backup pack to keep ID card printers working even in the harshest conditions. It's not just full of nice-to-have accessories; each part in this pack is a critical component that can halt card production if it fails.

The printhead is what actually applies the image to the card; it's also the part under the most constant wear, since every single card that goes through the printer passes under it. When a printhead starts to fail, you'll usually see it before it stops completely: faded patches, streaking or lines running through the print. Left unreplaced, it stops producing usable cards altogether and issuance halts until a replacement arrives.

The reversible up/down encoding module handles flipping and positioning cards correctly as they move through the printer for encoding, the part of the process that makes sure data ends up written the right way round on a card that needs it. If this fails, cards can come out with encoding errors or in the wrong orientation, which usually means a card gets rejected and reissued rather than handed out as-is, slowing down every batch that needs encoding done.

The detachable card hopper is what feeds blank cards into the printer in the first place. It's a mechanical part, so it's prone to wear and misfeeds over time, cards jamming, failing to pull through or the printer refusing to pick one up at all. When it goes, nothing physically gets into the printer to be printed on, regardless of whether the printhead or encoder are working fine.

Because all three sit on the same critical path, one component failing is often enough to stop the whole job. Having replacements already on the shelf means a five-minute swap gets you back to issuing cards, rather than a support call and a wait while the affected part is sourced and shipped.
