HID® Signo™ Reader 40 Overview

The HID Signo 40 is a wall switch mount access control reader that reads prox cards, smart cards and mobile credentials at the same door. This helps most on sites part-way through an upgrade. Long-serving staff may still carry 125 kHz prox fobs while new starters get Seos cards or phone credentials. One Signo reader accepts both. Once the last prox card is retired, the old technology can be switched off at the reader.

Choosing the Right Signo 40 Profile

Every Signo 40 is ordered with a credential profile, and the profile decides which cards the reader accepts.

• Standard Profile (40NKS-00-000000 for pigtail): reads every supported smart, mobile and 125 kHz prox credential. This is the right choice for most sites and the only option for a mix of prox and smart cards.
• Smart Profile: reads Seos, iCLASS and MIFARE smart credentials plus HID Mobile Access, but ignores 125 kHz prox. It suits a site that has finished moving off prox and wants to stop easily copied cards opening its doors.
• Seos Profile: reads Seos cards and HID Mobile Access only, for the tightest control over which credentials work.
• Custom Profile: set up to match an organisation’s own credential programme and card formats.

The Signo 40 has no keypad. If a door needs multi-factor authentication, where someone presents a card and then enters a PIN, the HID Signo 40K adds a keypad to the same wall switch format.

HID Mobile Access and Apple Wallet

The Signo 40 reader is mobile ready out of the box, with native Bluetooth and NFC (near field communication). Staff can open doors with an HID Mobile Access credential on their phone. Apple’s Enhanced Contactless Polling (ECP) also lets the reader accept employee badges stored in their Apple Wallet. Each phone credential means one less card to print and one less card to replace when it goes missing.

Secure Access Control for High-Security Doors

The reader stores its cryptographic keys on certified secure element hardware. OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) gives secure bidirectional communication between the reader and the access control panel. Wiegand sends data one way and unencrypted. OSDP’s secure channel encrypts that traffic and lets the system confirm the reader is still connected. That makes the Signo 40 a strong fit for server rooms, pharmacy stores and records offices.

The surface detection feature checks what the reader is mounted on and recalibrates its read range to suit. If the reader sits on a metal surface, plastic spacers help it keep its full range. An administrator can also configure the reader and update its firmware through HID Reader Manager, without visiting each door with a laptop.

The Signo 40 covers a standard single-gang switch box, so it fits the space left by an older HID R40 or RP40 reader when a site upgrades its access control system.
