Magicard's Pronto is a hand-fed, single-sided printer built for small businesses and ideal for beginners printing staff ID, membership, or loyalty cards in low volumes. Direct-to-card printing means the thermal printhead applies your design straight onto the card surface. There's no separate encoding step or complexity; just power it on and print.

  • Printer Technology: Direct-To-Card / Rewritable
  • Print Resolution: 300 dpi
  • Hopper Capacity: Hand-Fed
  • Print Speed: 7 Seconds Monochrome, 35 Seconds Full Colour
  • Card Compatibility: CR80 and CR79

Magicard Pronto ID Card Printer: Simple, Reliable ID Card Printing for Small Businesses

The Pronto is built around one job: getting a small business printing professional ID cards without a learning curve. It's incredibly easy to use: just power it up, install the driver, drop the dye film in, and you're printing. There's no automatic feeder to configure, as cards are hand-fed one at a time, which suits a business printing a handful of cards a week rather than hundreds.

At 7 seconds for a monochrome card and 35 seconds for full colour, it's quick enough that a new starter's ID card can be ready before they've finished their induction paperwork. It's compatible with Windows 8, 10 (32 and 64-bit), Windows Server 2012 and 2016, and Mac OS, so it fits into most existing office setups without needing new hardware.

The cards from Pronto are also rewritable: print the front of a card in full colour, and the back can be printed, erased, and reprinted in monochrome up to 500 times. This is an excellent option for anything that changes regularly, a visitor pass reissued daily or a temporary contractor badge, rather than printing a fresh card every time.

This is a single-sided printer, so it prints on one side of the card only. Although, as we've just demonstrated, you can simply flip the card over if you need to print on the back side of it. It prints full colour and monochrome designs across the card surface, though as a direct-to-card printer, a small border is left right at the card's edge; this protects the printhead from damage rather than being a design limitation.

One thing worth knowing before you order: the Pronto isn't recommended for access control cards with a raised chip. Printing directly over the chip with a direct-to-card printer can cause blemishes and lead to reissues. If access control cards are what you need, our Magicard Ultima retransfer printer handles that properly. And if you're printing higher volumes but don't need retransfer technology, the Magicard 300 is a faster direct-to-card step-up worth a look.

Every Pronto is designed and manufactured at the Magicard by Brady headquarters in Weymouth, UK. They are backed by a 2-year MagiCover Limited Warranty and supported by a UK-based Magicard support team.

Which Magicard Printer Do You Need?

Magicard ID card printers are some of the best in the industry. The quality of materials used and the technology inside ensure that they grow with you as your needs for ID evolve and last for years of use.

The Pronto is Magicard's entry-point ID card printer, built for small businesses and beginners printing lower volumes. If you're printing enough cards that hand-feeding becomes a bottleneck, the Magicard Pronto100 offers an automatic feeder and faster speeds for a bit more outlay. Both are great choices; it genuinely comes down to your volume and budget, and our team can help you decide which one fits.

Magicard Pronto ID Card Printer Bundle

Magicard Pronto Bundle

If you need printing straight out of the box, we recommend our Magicard Pronto ID card printer bundle. It offers the free design software that comes with all of our ID card printers, as well as the consumables specifically designed to enhance your card production.

This bundle includes:

HoloKote Security Built-In

Every Pronto includes HoloKote® security as standard. HoloKote is a printed watermark that helps prevent card duplication. You can choose from four predefined watermark designs directly from the printer driver. For extra visual security, pair it with HoloPatch® ID cards, which have a highlighted section for the watermark that becomes a reflective gold seal, making a cloned or tampered card obvious at a glance.

Compatible Blank Cards

Print your designs onto high-quality cards for the best results. We supply a range of blank cards (CR80 - ISO/IEC 7810:2003) that are perfect for use with your card printer. Choose from our broad range of plastic cards to suit your needs, or opt for one of our more sustainable card solutions.

Compatible Printer Accessories

We recommend cleaning your ID card printer when replacing the printer ribbon to keep the printer performing at its best and to prevent any build-up of dust and debris. Check out all of our accessories such as maintenance kits, which are perfect for increasing your printer's lifespan. We also offer a printhead for the Pronto if you ever need a new one.

Magicard Pronto Printer FAQs

What does it actually cost me per card once ribbon and blank cards are factored in?

Using our own current prices: a full-colour card runs at roughly £0.33 each (a 300-print colour ribbon at £62.25 works out to about £0.21 a card, plus around £0.12 a card for a standard blank PVC card). A monochrome card is closer to £0.14 each (a 1,000-print black ribbon at £16.95 is under 2p a card, plus the same £0.12 for the card itself). If you're printing photo ID cards, the Pronto is excellent value for money and the ideal printer for small businesses looking for professional quality cards on a budget.

How many cards can I realistically print in a day, given it's a manual feeder rather than automatic?

The printer itself takes 35 seconds per full-colour card, but that's the print cycle, not the whole job. Hand-feeding adds loading and removal time on top. Realistically, one person working steadily could get through somewhere around 60-80 cards in a focused hour of continuous printing. In practice, most buyers at this level aren't running the printer for a continuous hour; they're printing a handful of cards as new starters, or visitors come in through the day, which is exactly the volume this printer is built for.

Can this take a MIFARE or HID encoder, or do I need the Pronto100/another model for that?

Neither the Pronto nor the Pronto 100 supports MIFARE, HID, or any contactless/contact chip encoding. The Pronto's only encoding option is a magnetic stripe upgrade. If you need MIFARE or HID smart card encoding, the Magicard 300 is the entry point in the range that actually offers it and is available in single-sided and double-sided options.

What card design software actually works with the standalone printer if I don't buy the bundle?

The Pronto isn't locked to one piece of software, it works through a standard Windows or Mac print driver, so most ID card design tools will run it. We provide CardExchange Go with every printer purchase on ID Card Centre, which is an excellent card printing software that is easy to use and has loads of features to grow into. CardExchange Premium, EasyBadge, and cardPresso software are all genuinely compatible options too, so if you need more than what Go can provide straight out of the box, you have a lot of options.

How long does the printhead typically last before I'm looking at a replacement?

Magicard's own warranty covers the printhead for 50,000 cards or 250,000 panels, whichever comes first; that's the manufacturer's own real-world benchmark for expected life under normal use with genuine consumables.

What's the real-world reliability like?

Structurally, the Pronto is a really simple machine to operate. It's as simple as setting it to print in the software, manually feeding in a card and removing the card once it's complete. If you've never printed ID cards before, it's one of the most straightforward machines to use and if you have plenty of experience, you'll enjoy the no-nonsense printing too. It does the job without you needing to reread the manual each and every time you're ready to press print.

If it breaks, what's the repair/support process and turnaround time?

The Magicard Pronto is covered by a 2-year MagiCover Limited Warranty against workmanship defects and component failure, with an optional 1-year extension, backed by Magicard's UK-based support team. Our UK-based team is also here to support you from before you buy to years after, if you have any further questions.
