Choosing the right ID Card Printer starts with how many cards you print

Your yearly card count tells you more about the printer you need than any other spec. It decides how big the card hopper should be and how fast the printer needs to run. This band suits organisations printing every week, and printers in this band can also include encoding modules if needed. The Zebra ZC300, Zebra ZC350 and Magicard 300 all take 100 cards in the input hopper and their print speeds mean a morning's intake of new starters is done in minutes.

This band suits universities, hospitals and large employers running card production daily. The Evolis Primacy 2 is our bestseller for this kind of workload and accepts a lamination module as your needs grow. For the biggest runs, the IDP Smart 70 and Evolis Quantum 2 both hold 500 cards in the input hopper. So a full intake of student IDs can run without anyone standing over the printer waiting to refill it.

Printer Technology Explained


When producing photo ID cards, the type of printing technology you require depends on what you need your cards and badges to look like. These types of technology produce different results, and have benefits depending on the card surface you are printing onto.


Dye-Sublimation


Also known as DTC printers, some of the cheapest ID card printers utilise dye sublimation technology, which is where the printhead heats the ink to fuse it directly to the card's surface.

Direct-To-Card


Direct-to-card ID card printers (DTC) work in the same way as dye sublimation. The heating process creates million shades of YMCK for lifelike colour printing.

Retransfer Printers


Suitable for printing onto the surface of access control cards, retransfer ID card printers print colour designs onto a clear film that is then fused onto the plastic card.

Rewrite


Rewrite printers offer capabilities for creating and reusing ID cards, using heat technology and specialised cards to create a monochrome blue or black design that can be erased.
