Evolis provides two different solutions to suit different needs. Retransfer card printers are ideal for anyone that needs to print a large number of cards on a regular basis, or for anyone that will be printing onto access control cards. For lower print volumes, dye sublimation (also known as direct-to-card or DTC card printers) is a more cost-effective solution with great results.

Retransfer printers have a high cost of ownership over dye sublimation printers, but produce better, more consistent results, with the lowest error rate. If you're looking to print complex artwork, printers like the Evolis Agilia or Avansia are ideal.

To get such consistent results, these printers employ a two step production method. First, the printer uses a YMCKO or single colour ribbon to create your card design on a clear film, which is then transferred onto the surface of the ID card using heat. This method makes retransfer ideal for printing onto cards that may have an uneven surface, such as access control cards. It also allows for over-the-edge printing, where the artwork fills the entire surface of the card.

Evolis retransfer printers are typically dual sided to allow content on both sides of the card.

These types of desktop card printers offer a lower cost of ownership, as they have a much simpler process to produce identity cards. The dye is transferred from the ribbons to the plastic or paper card by means of heated printheads, with different temperatures creating different hues of colour. These colour variations allow for realistic matching on logos and photos, but offer less clarity on fine details and complex patterns.

Evolis ID printers have a number of built-in and optional security features that provide increased safety for your organisation.

Kineclipse® masks any data left imprinted on your printer ribbons after your cards have been printed, allowing for safe disposal without the risk of the data falling into the wrong hands. You can also upgrade with a mechanical lock that prevents the machine from being opened, or a Kensington lock that ensures the unit cannot be removed from its position within the environment..

Other digital safety options are also available to upgrade, such as digital erasing. This removes any data stored in the internal memory of the device.

Most Evolis printers come with a comprehensive range of encoding upgrades and support for smart cards. If you have an existing access control system, Evolis printers allow you to add smart card capabilities to your printed cards with a range of modules, from brands such as Elatec, HID, SpringCard and more.
